Showcase of Graduate work

The Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) program at Michigan State University (MSU) not only taught me theories behind good teaching practice, but helped me live it as a graduate student. The coursework was designed in such a way that I experienced, not just read about, how educational technology could be used to provide students with a variety of engaging learning opportunities. I also came to develop more awareness of my role as an educator in practicing and cultivating awareness of digital citizenship amongst students and colleagues.

The work showcased on this page is a selection of artifacts created during my time in the MAET program that demonstrate my beliefs, skills, and dedication to the craft of teaching. I've organized the artifacts into three overarching categories: Creative Technology, Thoughtful Teaching Practices, and Vision & Mission. The Creative Technology category demonstrates the various ways I used technology for my course assignments at MSU that I plan to incorporate into my classroom. The Thoughtful Teaching Practices category includes tools that I've developed that I can implement to improve as an educator and design more impactful learning experiences for my students. The artifacts in the last category, Vision & Mission, give a glimpse into my beliefs and ideas of how education can and should move forward.

Sketch-note Video

Creating a sketch-note style video requires a lot of thought and preparation. It is a great way for students to demonstrate their thought process creatively. This video was my very first attempt at creating this type of media, and it demonstrates that I am able to learn new approaches to technology, just as I know that my students will be able to as well.

Makey-Makey

Students can get hands-on and learn about basic coding with a simple kit like the Makey-Makey. I've created a sample lesson plan that utilizes this kit to teach students about conductivity and circuits. This was a tool that was outside of my comfort zone, but I embraced the challenge and created an engaging lesson.

Video Reflections

Taking the time to reflect on the process of learning, not just focusing on the final product, helps students see overall improvement. In this video, I reflected on my journey of learning how to write in calligraphy using only online resources like Youtube and blogs, sharing my thoughtful reasoning behind the choices I made and what resources I pursued.

Assesment Design Checklist

There are several factors to consider when creating meaningful assessments. Teachers can refer to this checklist when creating assessments to make sure they are on the right track. This checklist demonstrates the level of care I take in the creation of each of my assessments.

EquatIO

Learning disabilities, like dyslexia and dysgraphia, can make learning in a traditional classroom difficult. Along with other differentiating strategies, assistive technologies, like EquatIO, can further level the playing field for these students. I am always looking for new and better ways to differentiate learning for my students to maximize their success.

Student Check-In

Formative assessments come in all shapes and sizes. This particular formative assessment is designed to give students more voice in their learning and push students to practice metacognitive thinking. Students have valuable insights to share when given the opportunity. Student connection and communication is highly valued in my classroom.

Inquiry-Driven Learning Proposal

How can we shift education from a culture of standardized testing to one that is more student-inquiry driven? In this video, I walk you through my three-part proposal, a showcase of my ability to tackle difficult problems and come up with thoughtful, research-backed solutions forward.

Addressing Social Media

Social media is a powerful tool that teaches valuable lessons like public image, responsibility, and the influential power of information or misinformation. It is equally powerful in damaging self-esteem and can seriously harm students. Teachers must play a role in protecting students through education. This artifact demonstrates how I would approach administration in tackling thorny issues.

Philosophy of Assessment

Assessment, whether formative or summative, is an integral part of teaching and learning. What teachers do with the data they obtain from assessments (or are unable to obtain) determines next steps for both students and teachers. I've shared my three core beliefs about how I approach assessment in this short blog post.
